BinLaden 300x166 Osama Bin Laden Killed by US forces in Pakistan

2 May 2011

Washington DC- In a Sunday night address from the White House, President Obama announced that Al-Qaeda founder and leader Osama Bin Laden was killed by US ground forces in Pakistan

  • Bin Laden was shot dead at a compound near Islamabad where he had been hiding since at least last summer, in a ground operation based on US intelligence
  • Mr Obama said it was “the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat al-Qaeda”. Other world leaders welcomed the news of his death
  • Bin Laden was buried at sea after a Muslim funeral on board an aircraft carrier, according to Pentagon officials
  • Bin Laden is widely believed to have been behind the bombings of US embassies in East Africa, the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000 and the attacks on New York and Washington after declaring war on America in 1998
  • How much his death will affect Al Qaeda itself remains unclear to experts, but many warn against immediate threats from Al Qaeda which may avenge his death
