Israeli settlers Middle East peace talks in crisis

JERUSALEM – American diplomats are leading frantic negotiations to prevent the collapse of the latest round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

  • Israeli government freeze on the construction of new settlements on the West Bank expired at midnight; building operations resumed within hours.
  • Palestinian officials previously said that any new building on territory they consider part of a future Palestinian state would lead to their exit from peace talks.
  • US officials attempt to keep talks going between both sides.
  • Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss diplomatic strategy with his negotiators in Ramallah and Arab League in Cairo; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calls on settlers to display “restraint and responsibility.”
