NIGERIA – Revenge killings motivated by religious differences or property ownerships continue to plague the country.

  • Fourteen more mutilated bodies, including seven young siblings all belonging to the same family, were found in the village of Tsohuwan Forom in central Nigeria’s Plateau State.
  • Religious clashes between Christians and Muslims have resulted in at least 42 deaths.
  • Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan offered concerns for the lapse in security forces and is assessing the current situation. The government recently initiated new strict anti-terrorism laws that call for the death penalty if attacks lead to fatalities.
  • Islamist extremist group Boko Haram claimed responsibility in last month’s suicide bomb attack at the UN headquarters in Abuja that left 21 dead.
  • The country has been sharply divided between Muslims in the north and Christians in the south. Violent attacks carried out by extremists have increased in frequency since last year, pitting communities against one another.
