BEIRUT, LEBANON – Arrest warrants for four Shia Hezbollah members submitted by UN tribunal for 2005 bombing that killed Hariri and 22 others.

  • UN tribunal offered arrest warrants for four members of the Shia Hezbollah movement who are believed to be responsible for the 2005 killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri.
  • Sa’ad Hariri’s press office issued statements calling on the government to fully cooperate with the tribunal.
  • News of the indictments has raised concerns over the possible resurgence of sectarian violence between the country’s Sunnis and Shiites, and beyond in the wider region. Hezbollah denied any role in the bombing.
  • On January 14, 2005, a bomb was detonated, killing Hariri and 22 others in downtown Beirut. R. Hariri was one of Lebanon’s most recognized Sunni leaders.
  • The Tribunal leading the investigation over Hariri’s death was set up in The Hague in 2009 by the United Nations.
