TRIPOLI, LIBYA – Rebel forces took control of the capital, further challenging Col. Muammar el-Gaddafi’s four-decade hold on the country.
- Rebels arrested two of Gaddafi’s sons on Monday. Gaddafi’s whereabouts remain unknown.
- Citizens demanding Gaddafi’s exit gathered at Green Square in Tripoli and took to the streets of Benghazi in celebration of their advancement in the fight.
- Heavy clashes between rebels and pro-Gaddafi supporters continue throughout Libya.
- Protests first erupted in Libya in mid-February when Gaddafi loyalists and troops attacked peaceful demonstrators. Many Libyans were inspired by the revolts for democracy in Egypt and Tunisia, and called for Gaddafi’s removal from power.
