MEDIA ALERT: French troops in Mali prepare for first major ground operation against insurgents Jan. 16, 2013

French troops are moving north Wednesday for their first major ground operation in Mali alongside Malian troops, in an attempt to stop rebels, believed to be associated with the terrorist group al-Qaeda, from dominating a region that some fear could become an extremist hot spot and a  launching pad for terrorist attacks. The insurgents have moved north into southern Algeria, where they kidnapped several people including Japanese nationals as well as other foreigners. (Sources: BBC, AP, New York Times)
