YEMEN – Yemen Defense Ministry announced that Anwar al-Awlaki was killed with four others in Yemen today.

  • Eyewitness reports suggest that the deaths were the result of a U.S. drone strike in an al-Qaeda dominated region in central Yemen.
  • Anwar al-Awlaki had dual American-Yemeni citizenship, and was actively pursued by U.S. and Yemen security forces for many years because of his ties to al-Qaeda and terrorist activities.
  • In July 2010, Washington placed Awlaki on its list of terrorism supporters, freezing his financial assets and banning any transactions with him.
