Dr. Christopher Davidson is a policy expert on the Gulf monarchies and specializes in the field of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. Having lived and worked in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Beirut, Dr. Davidson has an extensive knowledge of this region of the world.
Because of his area of specialization, Dr. Davidson has provided consultations and reports for a variety of institutions and organizations worldwide. These organizations include the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the British Embassies to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, the British Armed Forces, the Scottish Executive, the Dubai Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Japan Institute of Energy Economics, PA Consulting, Jones Lang La Salle, Oxford Business Group, and Oxford Analytica. Additionally, Dr. Davidson is currently supervising a number of doctoral dissertations on Gulf and Lebanese politics and security. He is also a policy expert on the Gulf monarchies, notably the United Arab Emirates, with a secondary interest in Lebanese politics.
Dr. Davidson has also made various appearances in the media to provide commentary on his area of expertise. His television and radio credits include the BBC World Service, BBC Radio 4, NBC, WNYC, NPR, American Public Radio, The Discovery Channel, and Abu Dhabi TV. His newspaper and magazine citations include The Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph, The New York Times, US News, The Times Higher Educational Supplement, Fortune Magazine, Forbes Magazine, The New Statesman, Prospect Magazine, Newsweek, City Journal, Al-Arabiya, and Gulf News. His opinion editorials have appeared in The New Statesman, The National (Abu Dhabi), The Daily Star (Beirut), and Daily News (Egypt).
Currently, Dr. Davidson is a fellow of the Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, Durham University. He read Modern History at King’s College, University of Cambridge, before taking his M.Lit and PhD in Middle Eastern Studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Before joining the Institute, he was an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates, first on the Abu Dhabi campus and then in Dubai.
