kongdanoh photo Kongdan OhDr. Kongdan (Katy) Oh is a Research Staff Member at the Institute for Defense Analyses and a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at The Brookings Institution.  She conducts research on North and South Korean politics and economy, inter-Korean relations, Japan-Korea relations, inter-Asian cooperation, East Asian culture and society, and U.S. foreign and security policy toward East Asia.

Before coming to IDA in 1995, Dr. Oh worked as a policy analyst at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica.  She presents briefings to various branches of the U.S. government and has taught courses for the University of Maryland University College, Dominican College, the University of California at San Diego, George Mason University, and George Washington University.

She has written more than 150 journal articles, book chapters, conference papers, and monographs, in addition to five books; most recently, The Hidden People of North Korea: Everyday Life in the Hermit Kingdom.  She is frequently cited in the national and international news media, including the New York Times and the Washington Post, and gives television and radio interviews to CNN, the BBC, NPR, Voice of America, and many other news outlets.  She has also appeared on the PBS Newshour, Nightline, and Charlie Rose.

She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Pacific Basin Council of Dominican University, the Council on U.S.-Korea Security Studies, and USCSACP, and is co-founder and co-director of The Korea Club of Washington, D.C.
