Jon Tonge Jonathan TongeJonathan Tonge is Professor of Politics at the University of Liverpool and President of the Political Studies Association of the United Kingdom. He has produced 14 books on British and Irish politics and is particularly associated with academic research on Northern Ireland politics and British elections and parties.

Recent works include Abandoning the Past? Former Political Prisoners and Political Reconciliation in Northern Ireland ; Politics in Ireland: Convergence and Divergence in a two-polity island ; Irish Protestant IdentitiesNorthern Ireland ; Sinn Fein and the SDLP; From Alienation to Participation ; The New Northern Irish Politics? ; Britain Decides: the UK General Election; Northern Ireland: Conflict and Change and Labour’s Second Landslide: the British General Election.

Professor Tonge has successfully completed four Economic and Social Research Council and one Leverhulme Trust research projects. He has published research from these projects on British and Northern Irish politics in numerous leading international academic journals, including the British Journal of Politics and International Relations; Political Psychology; Electoral Studies; Party Politics; Political Studies; Terrorism and Political Violence; Space and Polity; Peace and Conflict Studies; Irish Political Studies and West European Politics. In 2008-9, Tonge chaired the Youth Citizenship Commission established by the UK government to explore ways of better connecting young people to politics.

A very regular television and radio commentator, Professor Tonge appears frequently on BBC and ITN, plus numerous global news networks. His viewpoints have appeared in a wide range of international newspapers.
