Professor Jørgen Nielsen is specialist in West-Muslim relations and Islam in Europe. He is Professor of Islamic studies at the University of Copenhagen and Director of the Centre for European Islamic Thought.
Professor Nielsen has PhD in Arab history at the American University of Beirut and MA in Middle East area studies, specialising in Islamic law and history at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.
Among other academic experience, in early 1978 Dr. Nielsen became Lecturer in Islam at the Centre for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations (CSIC) at Selly Oak Colleges, Birmingham, United Kingdom. He has done research on Muslims in Europe, publishing hundreds of articles and edited publications in the field. He also served as Director of the Centre 1988-2001.
In 1996 Professor Nielsen became Honorary Professor in the Department of Theology of the University of Birmingham and was appointed Co-Director of the University of Birmingham Network for Research in Theology and World Religions. Professor Nielsen has been a visiting professor at several universities, among others in Copenhagen and Utrecht.
Professor Nielsen lectures and participates in conferences regularly in various parts of the world, including Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, the Philippines, the United States and various European countries. Professor Nielsen has been a consultant to the Council of Europe and the EU Presidency on religious minorities, and to the Danish, Swedish and British foreign ministries on Islam and Europe.
