Sam Sasan Shoamanesh, is a bi-juridically trained (LL.B., LL.L.) attorney specialized in international law, and the Head of the Counsel Assistance Unit of the International Criminal Court (ICC). He is currently a fellow in international legal studies at Stanford University where he is focusing his interdisciplinary research on regional security in the Middle East.
On behalf of the Court, he, inter alia, initiated, and co-organized the first regional diplomatic conference on the ICC in the Middle East, in cooperation with the League of Arab States and the State of Qatar with the aim of establishing closer ties between the Court and the region.
His experience in international law has been buttressed at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights. Shoamanesh has held several international consultancies, including most recently, with the Center for Human Rights of the American Bar Association.
He has published widely on human rights, international law and international affairs, with particular focus on the Middle East. Shoamanesh is an editor of the Stanford Journal of International Law; past senior editor and board member of the Ottawa Law Review; a member of the International Bar Association and the American Society of International Law. He was sworn in and enrolled as Barrister-at-Law with the Law Society of Upper Canada and as a Solicitor with the Court of Appeal for Ontario and of the Supreme Court of Justice in 2004.
He has had extensive training in international law, diplomacy, as well as general and international negotiations at, among others, the UN in Vienna, Harvard Law School, University of Oxford, the Jordan Institute of Diplomacy, École Nationale d’Administration (Paris), Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva and The Hague Academy of International Law.
