Professor Javeed Alam is former Head of Department of Centre For European Studies, CIEFL. Mr. Alam is an India specialist and his wide range of expertise includes the philosophical treatment of modernity, secularism, marxism and communist movement, democracy as well as politics and the caste system in India.
Dr. Alam is a member of the Council of the Indian Council for Social Science Research and of the Indian Council for Philosophical Research; the Expert Group to examine and determine the structure and functions of the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Visitor’s Nominee to the Pondicherry University. Dr. Alam is also a member of the Executive Council of the newly formed English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, and Chairman of Expert Group on Minorities, Government of Kerala.
Dr. Alam has written extensive amount of articles to journals as well as edited and written books, among others: Dissent and Domination: Peasants and Politics (1985); India: Living With Modernity (OUP, 1999); Who Wants Democracy? (Orient Longman, Tracks of the Time 15, 2004); Gandhi: A Philosophical Debate (guest ed., Special Issue of Social Scientist, No. 396-397, May-June 2006).
Dr. Alam has PhD. from JNU, New Delhi (1973-74) and M.A. from Osmania University (1966). He has taught at Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla for 26 years, where he was twice the Head of Political Science Department. He has held many academic positions including. Visitnig Fellow, CSSSC, Calcutta (1981-83); Visiting Lectureship, York University, U.K. (1983-84); UGC Research Scientist—Professor, (1988—93.); Senior Visiting Fellow, CSDS, New Delhi (1995—97) and the ICSSR Senior Fellowship (1997—99). He retired in 2005 from his position at Centre For European Studies, CIEFL, where he was the first HOD and conducted courses in Philosophy and Social and Political Theory.
Dr. Alam is also active in the popular movements fighting for democratic values, human rights, secularism and the pluralist traditions of our society.
